By Car

Arnhem is on the A12 (from Utrecht / The Hague) and A50 (from the north and south). From Germany take the A3/A12 via Emmerich. Parking in the city centre is paid (street parking runs ~€4.60/hr in 2026) — the garages below are more economical and guarantee a space even during busy periods.

Local transport

Arnhem's bus network is operated by Breng (breng.nl). Most city-centre attractions are within easy walking distance of the station. Breng day passes are available at the station and via the Breng app.

Tourist information

The tourist information centre (VVV) is located at Stationsplein 13, directly at Arnhem Centraal. Staff speak English and can help with maps, tours, and bookings.

Getting to Oosterbeek

Breng bus 352 from Arnhem Centraal takes about 15 minutes to Oosterbeek — the base for the Airborne Museum Hartenstein and the war cemetery. Runs every 20 minutes during daytime hours.

Good to Know

Money & payments

The Netherlands is effectively cashless. Contactless Visa/Mastercard is accepted almost everywhere. A few market stalls and smaller cafés are cash-only — carry €20 as backup. Tipping is not expected; rounding up is common. No cash on buses: use a contactless card or OV-chipkaart.

Language

Nearly everyone in Arnhem speaks fluent English. Menus, museum information, and transport signage are routinely available in English. You will rarely need Dutch — though 'dank je wel' (thank you) is always appreciated.

Weather

Arnhem has a mild but unpredictable maritime climate. May to September is the best window — warmest, most daylight, terrace cafés in full swing. Rain is possible year-round, so a light waterproof jacket is always a good idea. Winter is quiet and cheaper.

Cycling

Arnhem is unusually hilly for the Netherlands — not the flat cruise visitors expect from Amsterdam or Utrecht. Bikes can be rented at OV-fiets stations at Arnhem Centraal (NS account required). Routes along the Rhine and through Sonsbeek Park are scenic and worth the effort. Consider an e-bike for the steeper sections.

Day Trips

Arnhem is an ideal base for exploring the region. Amsterdam, Utrecht, Nijmegen, and medieval Hanseatic cities like Zutphen and Doesburg are all within easy reach by train or bus — without the crowds and prices of staying in the capital.
