Historische Kelders Arnhem
This network of 36 interconnected stone vaults was built between the 13th and 15th centuries to serve the merchant houses that stood above them during Arnhem's medieval prosperity. The vaults were often rented separately to traders storing goods. Many were largely forgotten after the city was rebuilt following the 1944 bombardment, and only rediscovered during renovation work in the 1990s. After restoration the walls between them were broken through in 2001, creating a single accessible underground complex that opened to the public in 2002. The temperature inside stays a constant 15°C year-round.
The cellars run beneath the Rijnstraat and Oude Oeverstraat area — the commercial core of medieval Arnhem. Archaeological finds uncovered during the restoration are on display inside, alongside information boards that trace the city's history chronologically. The complex is used today for guided tours, exhibitions, and private events. Guided tours run on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons and on the first Sunday of each month.
