Burgers' Zoo
Johan Burgers founded the zoo in 1913; it now houses more than 10,000 animals from over 500 species across 45 hectares, with 35 species participating in European Endangered Species Programmes. The Burgers' Bush — a 1.5-hectare enclosed tropical rainforest — opened on 1 June 1988 and won both the Dutch and European Steel Prize. The Ocean tank holds 8 million litres of seawater with sharks and a full coral reef. The Rimba habitat, opened in 2008, replicates a Southeast Asian rainforest with Sumatran tigers and Malayan sun bears. Bus 3 from Arnhem Centraal runs directly to the entrance; allow a full day.
Burgers' holds two Guinness World Records: the Desert is the largest indoor desert in a zoo at 6,200 m², and the Mangrove — opened in 2017 — is the largest indoor swamp and mangrove in a zoo at 2,800 m². The Safari habitat is a large open plain with zebras, lions, rhinoceroses, ostriches, and leopards.
On the conservation side, the zoo has been breeding white rhinoceroses since 1977 and is one of Europe's main contributors to the species' population management programme. It also runs a breeding programme for the Socorro Dove, a bird extinct in the wild. Each year the Burgers' Zoo Charitable Foundation awards three prizes of €50,000 to young conservationists through the Future for Nature Awards. The zoo draws approximately one million visitors annually.
