Landgoed Mariëndaal

naturepark

The Mariënborn monastery was founded here in 1392 as one of the early houses of the Devotio Moderna movement, known in Latin as Domus Fontis Beatae Mariae. After the Reformation it was dissolved in 1580 and its stones were reused for roads and buildings in Arnhem. A country house was built on the site around 1740 and the estate passed through several owners before Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen (GLK) acquired it in 1936. The Groene Bedstee — a 300-metre tunnel formed from trained beech hedges — was planted in 1865 so the ladies of the manor could walk outdoors without sun exposure. Footpaths through the estate are freely accessible year-round.

The estate sits in a glacially-formed erosion valley with old-growth woodland, streams, and ponds. The path network connects to the wider Arnhemse Landgoederen trail, which links several historic country estates on Arnhem's western fringe. Parking is available at Schelmseweg 86 near the main entrance; the house and its immediate surroundings are privately managed and not open to visitors.
