Uiterwaardenpark Meinerswijk
Europe's largest public floodplain city park, covering 300 hectares along the Rhine west of the city centre. Developed as part of the Dutch 'Room for the River' programme, two high-water channels were cut through the park to increase the Rhine's discharge capacity and reduce flood levels. The park supports more than 200 bird species, over 450 plant species, and semi-wild herds of Konik horses and Galloway cattle that maintain the open landscape. The flat, open terrain is completely unlike Arnhem's hilly northern parks. Accessible year-round; free to enter.
Sixteen kilometres of marked walking and cycling paths run through the park. A floating bird-observation house is positioned to watch waterfowl without disturbing them, and a summer ferry crosses the Rhine from the park. Be aware that paths flood 10–20 days per year during high water and are temporarily inaccessible. Parking is available at the Steenen Camer restaurant near the main entrance.
